Chard 2nd XI just did enough to take the points in the first of the derby fixtures between the sides and to keep their promotion push on target.

Without producing their best form, Chard A controlled the first half and eased into a two goal lead. Gareth Eggle struck first via a penalty corner assisted by an accurate and fast injection of the ball by Jason Goddard. Then Harvey Dening fired in a reverse stick shot having been set up by Trevor Goss, who wrongfooted the defence, dummying to pass, before dribbling into the D and crossing.

When Eggle added his second and the A team's third early in the second half, it looked as though the game was wrapped up. But inter-club derbies are no respecters of the form book. Two goals from consecutive penalty corners both scored by Alec Evans within the course of a few minutes threatened to turn the game on its head. Duncan Lewis found more space at the heart of midfield to slide passes through to the B teams young forward line and the As defence was suddenly under intense pressure. Basic ball control errors, sluggishness in passing and momentary hesitation compounded problems for the As. Evans went within a whisker of a hat trick and an equaliser, his lofted effort across the face of goal just being kept out at the far post by Riley Millett. Ian Rockett in goal for the As made some fine saves during the course of the game, but none more vital than that which kept out another goal bound shot from another penalty corner.

In the final ten minutes, the As finally recovered some composure and went close to settling their jitters, both Dening and Eggle hitting the post and keeper Tony Millett saving another shot. At the other end Evans tested Rockett again when put through by a pinpoint pass from Steve Dare lofted over the As defenders. The return fixture next March could be a similarly close encounter.
