Chard made the long journey to Bridgwater with a slim but optimistic squad of 11 players, and had a strong but slippery first 5 minutes as it started pouring it down from the opening whistle.
After bumpy first fifteen accompanied by Bridgwater taking control with their shoulders and scoring two goals, Bridgwater were flabbergasted by the next stretch of play as chard piled on the pressure with Jason and Luc over to the right, secured by Isaac and Benny in the middle.
Unfortunately, Bridgwater soon found their rhythm and after capitalising on some questionable passing, tallied up two more goals before half time, providing Luke with a masterful goalkeeper training session, as he threw in some killer saves.
And after a passionate pep talk from Rich, who supplied Chard with some slightly soggy jelly babies, the team returned for the second half.
Despite their efforts, Bridgewater soon extended their lead, adding five more goals throughout the half. Chard, however, continued to fight hard — Archie worked tirelessly up front, creating chances and keeping the pressure on, while Isaac managed a dangerous shot on goal that had the Bridgwater defence scrambling.
After a moment of relief for Bridgwater when Ollie faceplanted in spectacular fashion, Chard immediately piled on the pressure and earned a short corner. Unfortunately, after Benny was sent back, Bridgwater defence survived the short unscathed.
The commitment nevertheless stayed high, Mike breaking up attacks and Richard, Arthur, Luc and Tom (even sacrificing his hand) holding the score line respectable in defence, with Luke continuing to frustrate the Bridgwater forwards with some spectacular saves.
By the final whistle, chards energy had started to wane as they ran out of answers for Bridgwater’s unrelenting attacks.
Still, there were standout performances to celebrate: man of the match went to Luke, whose heroics in goal kept the score line in the single digits at 9-0. Luc Brown coming a close second for his tireless work up and down the right. And with the game finally over, the team retreated to celebrate their efforts in the only way possible—pizza.
Great effort all round yesterday-let’s try bring back another win next Saturday!
