With thanks to our match day sponsor - DR FirstAid

Firstly, a big thank you to our Matchday Sponsor for their continued support — it really is appreciated. Thanks also to Gary and Alan, for umpiring. Their dedication never goes unnoticed. And thanks to those who came to cheer us on! (Wilf Spurdle must be due a start soon!)

Another weekend, another team sheet, as they say, especially for Chard Seconds! This week’s lineup saw yet another fresh combination of eleven, but we were particularly pleased to welcome back Jason, whose positivity and enthusiasm were a massive boost on what was a very wet and rather miserable day.

That enthusiasm showed early on, especially in the first half, where Jason produced some fantastic runs down the flank and was unlucky not to get himself on the scoresheet. In fact, we started brightly, with dominance in midfield driven by the energy and experience of Ben and Ed. For the first quarter, we looked confident, controlled, and—dare I say—like a team that was beginning to play some really good hockey.

Unfortunately, the opposition broke away after around 15 minutes and scored against the run of play. Heads didn’t drop, though. We continued to push forward and created several chances, including two short corners. Sadly, the striker was having a dreadful day and couldn’t connect cleanly, and the opportunities went begging.

The second half followed a similar pattern. More opportunities came our way—one shot went wide, and another short corner routine ended with a shot that found the back of the net, but it didn’t stand as the ball hadn’t been played outside the D. Frustrating, but encouraging all the same.

Once again, Luke delivered a Man of the Match performance in goal, with some brilliant saves that kept us in it. But at some point we need to involve him less in the game. Special mentions must also go to Elliot, who had an excellent game and made a real difference to the side with his work rate and composure.

Despite what felt like a disappointing result, there were plenty of signs of spirit and improvement. Our luck will turn—of that there’s no doubt. The biggest lesson we take forward is the importance of moving up and down the pitch as a unit, and trusting in quick, accurate short passes rather than relying on hopeful long balls. When we do that, we look like a team ready to win.

Onwards and upwards!
