Chard Ladies 1s travelled to Exeter this weekend and, despite a 3-0 defeat, produced one of their best team performances of the season.
Chard started strongly, matching Exeter across the pitch in what was a closely contested first half. Both teams enjoyed spells of possession and created chances, but Chard’s defensive line of Lois Butcher, Jade Dunning and Ruby Parris were outstanding, working tirelessly to keep Exeter at bay. Central defender EJ Hines was equally impressive, clearing countless balls and preventing Exeter from creating too many clear-cut opportunities.
At the other end, Chard’s forward line of Kerryn Mullis, Layla Anderson and Summer Solmon caused problems for the Exeter defence, creating several opportunities, only to be denied by some excellent saves from the home goalkeeper.
Chard’s determination and hard work saw them go into half-time with the score deservedly level at 0-0.
The second half began in much the same fashion, with Chard continuing to battle for every ball. Midfielders Sasha Taylor, Min Taylor, Katie Fear and Amy Goss worked relentlessly to win possession, link up play and create opportunities going forward.
Goalkeeper Hattie Thorne produced a string of brilliant saves to keep Exeter off the scoresheet, but the home side eventually managed to break the deadlock and take the lead.
Chard refused to let their heads drop and continued pushing for an equaliser. As they committed more players forward, the game began to open up, allowing Exeter to capitalise and add two further goals before the final whistle.
While the 3-0 scoreline was disappointing, it certainly did not reflect the effort, determination and quality of Chard’s performance. Every player gave their all from the first whistle to the last, with some excellent passages of play and fantastic teamwork throughout. A performance the whole team can be proud of and plenty of positives to take into next weekend!
Player of the Match: Min Taylor – for a dominant performance in central midfield, battling tirelessly and controlling the middle of the pitch.
Donkey of the Day: EJ Hines – for running early at a defensive short corner not once, but twice in a row! Clearly just a little too eager to get going!
