Chard Ladies 1XI travelled to Exeter University to take on Isca 4XI in what proved to be an exciting and hard-fought match.
Isca started strongly, dominating the opening ten minutes and forcing Chard’s defence to stay alert and organised. The back line worked tirelessly to keep Isca out during this spell of pressure.
Despite the early pressure, it was Chard who struck first. A well-drilled short corner routine saw the ball played to the top of the D, then pushed to the post where Katie Fear was perfectly positioned to slot the rebound home.
Isca soon levelled the score after a quick break left Chard’s keeper Hattie in a one-on-one situation, and the visitors were unable to keep the ball out.
Chard responded immediately, regaining the lead through a goalmouth scramble that once again saw Katie Fear on hand to deflect the ball into the net — straight out of the training ground playbook!
Before half time, Chard extended their advantage from another short corner. This time, Lois unleashed a classic strike from the top of the D that flew straight into the corner of the goal, giving Chard a 3–1 lead at the break.
The second half saw Isca come out fighting, keeping much of the possession and piling on the pressure. However, Chard’s defence — EJ, Jade, Lois and Ruby — stood strong, cutting out attacks and limiting Isca’s chances on goal.
Against the run of play, Chard grabbed their fourth goal after a slick passing move down the left. Katie and Char combined beautifully before crossing to Kez, who calmly pushed the ball into the corner.
Isca managed to pull one back from a scrappy goalmouth scramble late in the game, but Chard held firm. Keeper Hattie made several key saves to preserve the two-goal cushion and secure a well-deserved 4–2 victory.
